Toy drive still needs lots of local support

It’s unfortunate that Toys for Tots won’t be working to fill the stockings of less-fortunate children in Mesa County this Christmas.

For more than 20 years, the program collected tens of thousands of toys for needy children here, thanks in large part to the efforts of Greg Merschel, the local coordinator of the Marine Corps-sponsored program for most of those years.

For whatever reason, Merschel didn’t file the necessary paperwork following last year’s toy drive and the documentation to proceed this year under the auspices of Toys for Tots. The result is, it’s too late now to mount a toy drive through that organization.

Fortunately, employees of the Mesa County Workforce Center, in conjunction with the local office of the Salvation Army, have begun their own effort to gather and distribute toys to needy children. We hope local benefactors, who in the past have donated through Toys for Tots, will rally around the local efforts and ensure there are plenty of presents to go around.

To donate toys or assist in the local toy drive, call Mesa County Workforce Director Sue Tuffin at 970-248-0861 or e-mail her at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).
