Triple Play temps seriously slash scores

The temperatures were cooler and the scores lower in the second round of the Western Slope Triple Play women’s tournament on Saturday.

With the second of three rounds at Tiara Rado Golf Course, there was a dramatic drop in scores from the previous day at Bookcliff Country Club.

In the first flight, first-round leader Danielle Atkinson holds a one-shot lead after her 77 at Tiara Rado. She has a two-day total of 152.

Loren Forney had the best round of the day at 73, a seven-shot improvement over Friday, to post a two-day total of 153 to hold the second spot.

Rose Bunning, who shot 79-79 over the two days, and Tami Holt, who had the second best round on Saturday at 76, are tied for third at 158.

Overall, golfers in the first flight shaved an average of six strokes off their scores from an 89.3 average on Friday to an 83 at Tiara Rado.

The heat was one factor and the longer course at Bookcliff another for the higher scores on Friday. With a 9 a.m. shotgun start on Saturday and under partly cloudy skies, it was a huge difference from the scorching heat on Friday when competitors started at noon.

Sheila Naski has a three-shot lead in the second flight after posting a 93 on Friday and an 80 on Saturday for a total of 173. With her 13-shot improvement, Naski’s 80 was the best round of the day in the second flight.

Connie Badini is second at 176, and Peggy Brink and Aiaga Roffey are at 179, followed by Jeanie Kruger at 181.

Badini and Kruger both shot 91 for the first-round lead.

The second-flight scores went from an average of 97.8 on Friday to 91.5 on Saturday.

In the third flight, Michelle Sahm has two-day total of 187 after shooting 97-90. She has a three-shot lead over Linda Metzler and Connie Olson, who are both at 190. Metzler had the best third flight round at 89.

The average scores in the third flight went from 108.9 at Bookcliff to 102.6 at Tiara Rado.

The final round will be today at The Golf Club at Redlands Mesa.

This year marked the return of this unique 54-hole women’s tournament. A total of 69 golfers are competing.
