Trooper fired at from SUV on Orchard Mesa

A Colorado State Patrol trooper was reportedly shot at early Sunday as he attempted to pull over a dark gray SUV for speeding on Orchard Mesa, authorities said.

Someone opened fire on the trooper after he turned on his overhead emergency lights to stop the vehicle. The trooper, who wasn’t injured, didn’t pursue the vehicle.

Grand Junction police were called to assist the trooper just after 1 a.m. in the area of 28 and B 1/2 roads, Sgt. Matt Smith said. Officers took over the crime scene and began combing the area for evidence.

Smith said police don’t have any information about the shooter or a more-detailed description of the vehicle.

A State Patrol spokesman declined to comment on the incident and referred questions to Grand Junction police, who are handling the investigation.
