Valley wrestlers in top form at regionals
Fruita Monument advanced seven wrestlers to the semifinals of the Class 5A Region 4 tournament on Friday at Standley Lake High School in Westminster.
The Wildcats are in second place in the team race with 78.5 points. Chaparral is first with 79. Top seed Coronado, a perennial state title contender, is third with 76.5 points.
Fruita’s Ian Konrad (120 pounds), Matt Bishop (126), Clayton Muller (132), Isaac Rodriguez (145), Kaden Fife (152), Jacob Seely (170) and Ty Taylor (182) are in the semifinals.
Grand Junction advanced four to the semifinals and is in seventh place with 42 points in the same region. Cody Lacy (106), Jacob Trujillo (145), Matt King (182) and Jonathan Pauli (195) are in the semifinals. King wrestles Taylor in the semifinals.
Central advanced three to the semifinals in the Region 3 tournament at Loveland.
Senior Dusty Sanchez (138) pinned No. 3 seed Melvin Gutierrez of Fairview in 2:46. Senior Martin Paredes (220) pinned No. 1 seed Jerell Nettles of Montbello in 38 seconds. Jacob Rubalcaba cruised to the 126-pound semifinals with a technical fall and pin.
Central heavyweight Jacob Crosby injured his elbow in practice this week and defaulted in the first round, but he may try to wrestle today in the consolation bracket to qualify for state.
Montrose has six wrestlers in the semifinals of the Region 4 tournament and is tied for third place with Palisade.
Thompson Valley leads the team race with 118.5 points. Montrose and Palisade have 76 points.
Montrose’s Terrell Banuelos (106), Emmanuel Sandoval (113), Caden Kahle (132), Matt Sandoval (138), Marcus Velasquez (160) and Jesus Casillas (285) are in the semifinals.
Palisade’s four semifinalists are Dalton Hannigan (126), Justin Ray (132), Trevor Garcia (145) and Armando Cabriales (220).
David Brown (113), Hunter Brasfield (152) and Alfredo Rosales (182) are in the semifinals for Delta.
Rifle has four semifinalists: Oscar Ruelas (120), Coy Zang (132), Dallas Rohrig (138) and Clayton Coombs (182).
Buena Vista took a commanding lead in the Region 1 tournament at Grand Valley High School with 71 points.
Hotchkiss is second with 56 points. The Bulldogs have eight wrestlers in the semifinals.
Grand Valley is tied for third with Salida with 50 points. The Cardinals have seven semifinalists.
Cedaredge is sixth (48.5 points) with four semifinalists. Olathe is seventh with five semifinalists and 47 points.
Twelve of Paonia’s 14 wrestlers advanced to the semifinals in the Region 1 tournament at Grand Junction High School.
The No. 1-ranked Eagles are leading the team race with 99 points. Dove Creek, with nine wrestlers in the semifinals, is second with 68.5. Meeker is third with 51.
The two Paonia wrestlers who lost are still in the hunt to qualify for state.
Meeker has seven wrestlers in the semifinals.
