The annual Spring Cleanup Program for city of Grand Junction neighborhoods begins this week.

Homes on the north side of North Avenue will have trucks picking up piles beginning Monday and homes on the south side of North Avenue (including Orchard Mesa and the Redlands) will see the trucks in their neighborhoods the following Monday.

What a great service this is and I encourage city residents to take advantage of the annual opportunity to muck out the house/garage/yard/shed.

Before you drag anything to the curb, first drag your mouse to gjcity.org to read the rules and regulations. There are numerous items that will not be picked up such as hazardous materials, electronics and more.

A number of charities are also listed at the website that might be able to use items you no longer want or need. Consider donating instead of dumping. It really is true — one man’s junk is another man’s treasure. Happy cleaning!

While grocery shopping during the next few weeks, make a point to throw a few extra canned and non-perishable foods into the basket, to help Stamp Out Hunger in Mesa County.

Now in its 18th year, the Stamp Out Hunger effort is conducted by letter carriers and is the nation’s largest one-day food drive. This year’s drive is Saturday, May 8.

The public is invited to leave a sturdy bag containing non-perishable foods, such as canned soup, canned vegetables, pasta or rice, next to their mailbox prior to the time of regular mail delivery on May 8. Mesa County letter carriers will collect the donations from homes across the county and take them to the Agape Food Basket of Fruita, Child and Migrant Services, the CCC Food Bank of Clifton, the Community Food Bank, Outreach Soup Kitchen, the Rescue Mission and The Salvation Army.

For more information, ask your letter carrier or contact your local post office. Information is also online at http://www.helpstampouthunger.com.
