The Mount Garfield Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution marked its 100th anniversary on Feb. 27. The group celebrated with a luncheon and the dedication of a Centennial Bench in Two Rivers Plaza.
The Grand Valley Junior Mavericks Midget level (high school age) competitive hockey team placed second in the Frozen Four playoff in Durango on March 5-6.
Annie Williams, Michelle Wheatley and Briana Board and the Colorado National Monument received an award of excellence for the monument’s Junior Ranger Explorer Day Camp from the Colorado Alliance for Environmental Education on March 12. Wheatley, the monument’s chief of interpretation and education, had the vision for the camp and sought the grant to make it happen. Williams and Board, seasonal interpretive rangers, operated the camp.
Mrs. Slipka’s fifth grade class at Rimrock Elementary School created posters for their favorite causes in the style of Post-Impressionist artist and poster maker Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.
Grand Junction’s Ray Coca was part of a reunion in February of the 1962 Colorado/Oklahoma wrestling team that started the International High School Exchange program. Ray Coca is shown on the far left. The 1962 team, with nine wrestlers from Colorado and four from Oklahoma, went on a tour that included Japan in an effort to improve international relationships along with acquiring a better understanding of freestyle wrestling.
Jacki (Bagel Man) of Main Street Bagels is hard at work. The Bagel Man will be out for 30 minutes each day letting folks know what particular item is free during at the Main Street Bagles location off North Avenue at Mesa State College.
Wendy Hoffman, national president of Blue Star Mothers of America Inc. and Grand Valley resident, is at the center of this photo taken at the Blue Star Mothers’ Homes for our Troops fund-raising gala in Boston on March 6, 2010. Pictured from left are Maura Yanosick, former Lt. Col. Oliver North, Wendy, Julie Roberts, Becky Hinkhouse and Kade Hinkhouse. The Hinkhouses are having a home built for them in Elizabeth, Colorado. All the chapters of Blue Star Mothers contribute to the homes project, which build houses for severely wounded soldiers.
“The Six Chicks”- Renee Eaton, Betty Davis, LeeAnn Brewer, Roxie Morris, Lois Helgeland and Sharon Petranovich - offer a toast in celebration of Betty’s birthday. These “Chicks” have a 22-year tradition of getting together for Betty’s birthday and for a Christmas dinner. The women went to elementary and high school together, graduating from Cedaredge High School and May 24, 1966.

Rochelle (Simpleman) Arvizo received her doctorate in May 2009 from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Rochelle, daughter of Bob and Joyce Simpleman of Loma, is a 1991 graduate of Fruita Monument High School. Rochelle is currently a postdoctoral researcher at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Her research involves using nanotechnology in treatment and diagnosis of cancer.

Debe Colby, left, and Susan Alvillar were co-chairs of the 2009-2010 United Way of Mesa County campaign. They want to thank the community for helping them reach the $1.1 million campaign goal.
Jeremy Johann, 15, got his second cow elk on a late season January hunt on private property on the Grand Mesa.
Barbara Brewer, Mesa County assessor, was awarded the National Martha Washington award from the Sons of American Revolution, Grand Mesa Chapter, on March 8 at the Republican Women’s luncheon at Two River’s Convention Center. Bill Buvinger, immediate past president, and Gary Parrott, vice president of the Sons and American Revolution, presented the award to Brewer.
Kenzie Thompson and Marlana Kevstetter of Smiles for Kids were at Mesa County Libraries’ Central Library on February 24th, 2010, to teach kids about proper brushing techniques. In honor of National Dental Health Month, Thompson and Kevstetter also read stories such as “Sweet Tooth” by Margie Palatini.
The Qwest Pioneers, a group of Retired Qwest employees, recently stuffed backpacks with rice, noodles, fruit cups and other food items for homeless children to take with them over a weekend. The group filled more than 129 backpacks for the Kids Aid’s Weekend Backpack Food Program.

“Pictured here are some students and a volunteer teacher that deserve recognition for their hard work and accomplishments,” wrote John Atchison, who took this photo of William Hyde and the middle school students he prepared for the 2010 Western Slope Mathcounts competition on February 20, 2010. These students all qualified to advance to the state Mathcounts competition on March 13, 2010, at the Colorado School of Mines in Golden.
For James and Chelsea Lorimor and Ryan and Jessica Lunk, February 8th and 9th were red-letter days. Chelsea, right, and Jessica are sisters and delivered babies seven hours apart at St. Mary’s Hospital. Ashlynn Hope Lunk was 5 pounds, 13 ounces, and Alysa Nicole Lorimor was 5 pounds, 15 ounces.
This is Jed Wilson and Tanner Perkins with Powderhorn Resort’s Buddy Werner team. Jed, who competes in the Boys J4 class, had the second-fastest overall time of the competition. He missed gold by only 3/100ths of a second. Tanner placed second in the Boys J6 class first run and first in the J6 second run.
