19-year-old dies in Montrose; 17-year-old arrested in case

UPDATE TUESDAY, 9:50 A.M.

The Montrose County Coroner has identified the stabbing victim as Zachary Culmer. According to the coroner, results of the forensic autopsy revealed the cause of death to be a stab wound to the neck, and the manner of death has been determined as homicide. The case is under investigation by multiple agencies.

A 19-year-old man is dead and a 17-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a stabbing death early Sunday morning in Montrose, according to the Montrose County Sheriff’s Department.

Authorities on Monday would not release the names of either the suspect or the victim. Spokeswoman Kristen Scuderi said more information would likely be released today.

The incident occurred at 4 a.m. Sunday at 14566 Mustang Lane in Montrose.

The suspect was being detained Monday at the Grand Mesa Youth Detention Center in Grand Junction.

Authorities on Monday also would not release a possible motive in the case or explain whether the suspect and victim knew each other.

Agents with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, the Montrose Police Department, the 7th Judicial District and the Montrose County Sheriff’s Department were assisting in the investigation, Scuderi said.
