1 critically hurt, 1 held in drunken-driving crash

One person was critically injured and another is under arrest in connection with a drunken-driving accident in Clifton late Friday night, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

Nickolas Luis Prieto, 30, 533 Jay Lee St., was booked into the Mesa County Jail early Saturday morning on suspicion of two counts of vehicular assault and single counts of reckless driving, driving under the influence of alcohol, disregarding a stop sign, and failing to provide proof of insurance, State Patrol Sgt. Mike Baker said. The two counts of vehicular assault allege Prieto was driving under the influence of alcohol and driving recklessly, Baker said.

The accident happened about 10:35 p.m. when a 1983 Chevrolet S-10 pickup driven west by Prieto on D 3/4 Road ran a stop sign and broadsided a 2006 Chevrolet 2500 pickup traveling north on 32 Road, the State Patrol said.

Larry Romero, 32, of Grand Junction, a passenger in the S-10 pickup, wasn’t wearing a seat belt and sustained serious injuries. He was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital, where he was listed in critical but stable condition late Saturday afternoon, according to a nursing supervisor.

Prieto, who was wearing a seat belt, sustained moderate injuries. He was treated at St. Mary’s, released and booked into jail, Baker said.

The driver of the 2500 pickup, 32-year-old Justin Cordova of Clifton, was uninjured, as was his son, 10-year-old Cody, who was a passenger in the 2500 pickup.

Both were wearing seat belts, according to the State Patrol.

The accident remains under investigation.
