$200,000 grant will help build housing for homeless vets

Grand Valley Catholic Outreach has received its biggest grant award so far for the second phase of St. Martin Place construction, a $200,000 grant from The Daniels Fund.

Catholic Outreach has gotten a handful of grants for the $2.6 million project and is waiting to hear if it got a couple more, according to Beverly Lampley, director of development and communication for Catholic Outreach.

She said the grant money will go toward the estimated $2.09 million it will take to construct the 24-unit apartment building for homeless veterans and the chronically homeless, but will not help cover related costs, such as the city of Grand Junction development fees Catholic Outreach had requested the city absorb.

Grand Junction City Council members hesitated to pay for the fees last week, instead asking Catholic Outreach to seek funding for those fees from the Downtown Development Authority (DDA) or School District 51. The project site west of the 16-unit, first phase of St. Martin Place in the 200 block of Pitkin Avenue lies just outside authority boundaries. Whether the authority will consider paying the fees likely will be discussed at the next DDA board meeting this Thursday.

Lampley said Catholic Outreach hopes the city will reconsider its thoughts about potentially not absorbing development fees for St. Martin Place, Phase II, but the organization plans to move forward with an April ground-breaking regardless of what happens.

“Certainly it’s something we hadn’t anticipated, but we’ll figure it out; it won’t slow us down,” Lampley said. “This community is so generous. Someone will step up; this project will happen.”

Lampley said tentative plans are to begin having people move into the new apartment building during the winter of 2014-15.

Catholic Outreach is relying mostly on grants and private donations to pay for the second phase project.

Catholic Outreach raised about $800,000 in a silent capital campaign for the project. Anyone who wants to donate more to the project can send a check to Grand Valley Catholic Outreach, St. Martin Place Phase II, 245 S. First St., Grand Junction, CO 81501.

Not Freida Cook, am a relative (Ltpar)  The homes for veterans project so far has been an outstanding one and the expansion is more than justified.  Congratulation to Catholic Outreach for caring about our veterans.
