2014-15 kindergarten orientation for District 51 schools set for Friday

Kindergarten registration season for 2014-15 will kick off Friday with kindergarten roundup at District 51 elementary schools.

Kindergarten roundup provides a chance for future students and their families to register for kindergarten this fall. Some schools also provide a tour of the school the child will attend in 2014-15 and a meet-and-greet with school staff.

Some schools have formal meetings while others invite parents to come by open-house style. Some have parents register on site and others send them home with registration forms.

The goal of each roundup event, though, is the same, according to District 51 Executive Director of Academic Achievement in Elementary Schools Lesley Rose: to help the district get an idea of how many students plan to start school this fall.

With first grade, for example, you can look at the students in first grade now and guess how big the second-grade class will be, Rose said. But with kindergarten, it’s not that easy.

“Kindergarten roundup is our way of registering as many kids as possible so we know how many are coming,” she said. “It’s just a good way for us to get a handle on the numbers and to introduce kids to their school.”

What portion of students who will eventually register for kindergarten this fall and show up for roundup varies by school, Rose said, with turnout ranging from 30 percent to 80 percent. Although there can be fluctuations from the norm, Rose said schools typically get the same percentage of students at roundup each year and can use that information to guess how many more students will register before the start of school and staff kindergarten classrooms accordingly.

Parents should come to roundup with their child’s birth certificate, immunization records, and proof of residency so the school can be sure a child lives in the appropriate attendance boundaries to enroll there.

Times for roundup are available on each school’s website. Dos Rios, Mesa View and Tope elementary schools will host their kindergarten roundup events today. Lottery and/or alternative schools, including Dual Immersion Academy, Grande River Virtual Academy, Independence Academy, Juniper Ridge Community School, Mesa Valley Vision and New Emerson follow a different process and do not have traditional kindergarten roundup events. Gateway School also does not have a kindergarten roundup.
