2nd shipment of vaccine for swine flu has arrived

A second shipment of the H1N1 flu vaccine arrived Tuesday at the Mesa County Health Department.

The shipment of 1,600 vaccines includes 900 of the flu mist and 700 injectable doses.

The majority of the injectable doses are slated for area health-care workers who have contact with those in the high-risk categories for getting the flu, the department said.

Anyone in the priority groups can receive a vaccine weekdays at the Health Department, 510 29 1/2 Road, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and until 5:45 p.m. on Wednesdays.

Priority groups include pregnant women; people with or who care for children 6 months or younger; health-care workers who provide direct patient care and children between the ages of 2 and 4.

Twelve people are hospitalized with the flu in Mesa County, which represents a small fraction of the numbers of people who have the flu, the Health Department said.

Four schools in District 51 — Nisley Elementary, Chipeta Elementary, Wingate Elementary and the Dual Immersion Academy — have experienced an increased rate of absenteeism.
