4 vying for Young Artist prize

Four pianists will perform works by four composers on Sunday, Feb. 24, for a grand prize: a guest artist engagement during the 2013–14 Grand Junction Symphony Orchestra season.

The final round of the symphony’s Young Artist Competition will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Recital Hall of the Colorado Mesa University’s Moss Performing Arts Center, 1231 N. 12th St.

Tickets cost $5 and can be purchased at gjsymphony.org, by phone at 243-6787, or at the door beginning one hour prior to the competition. Here is some information about the pianists as provided by the symphony:

■ Robert Buxton, 23, is a master’s student at the University of North Texas studying piano performance. He has performed at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Spanish Consulate and the YIVO institute of New York as a soloist and chamber musician. He will perform Chopin’s “Piano Concerto No. 1.”

■ Jiaqi Long, 16, originally from China, is a student at Accelerated Schools in Denver. Long won first prize at the Colorado Piano Festival in Greeley in November 2011 and was the winner of the 2012 Steinway Concerto Competition Senior Division. He will play with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra during its 2013–14 season. Long will perform Tchaikvosky’s “Piano Concerto No. 1.”

■ Zoe Lu, 21, is a senior at Weber State University in Utah. Lu has received awards from competitions such as the San Francisco Young Pianist’s Competition, East Bay Music Festival, the Sylvia M. Ghiglieri Piano Competition, the U.S. Open Music Competition and the Utah Music Teachers Association’s Young Artist Competition. She will perform Beethoven’s “Piano Concerto No. 4.”

■ Joshua Sawicki, 24, is an artist diploma candidate at Denver University and has studied at the Royal College of Music in London, Boston University and the University of South Florida. His past competition awards include the Musical Club of Hartford Piano Competition, the New Haven Renèe B. Fisher Piano Competition, the Hartford Young Artists Concerto Competition and the Williams Chorale New England Music Competition. He will perform Prokofiev’s “Piano Concerto No. 3.”
