4 injured in 4-vehicle wreck near Fruita

Fruita firefighters tend to one of four injured victims Sunday morning after a four-vehicle accident on Interstate 70 about a half mile east of the Fruita interchange. Two semi trucks, a van and a car were involved in the wreck, which shut down westbound I-70 for about an hour and a half and closed one lane of eastbound traffic.

Four people were hospitalized Sunday after the driver of an eastbound sedan lost control on Interstate 70 near Fruita, causing a four-vehicle accident that closed westbound traffic nearly two hours.

Fruita police officer Gary Younger said the accident happened around milepost 20 between 9 a.m. and 9:15 a.m., when the driver of the sedan lost control after passing another vehicle on the right.

After passing the vehicle, the sedan hit the back driver-side rear tire of a semi operated by 51-year-old Steve Easdon of Denver.

Easdon, who said he was headed to Denver, said the sedan hit his rig three times before it rolled into the median and across westbound traffic, coming to a rest on its wheels.

“Got two of my tires, hit my fuel tank and knocked the cap off,” said Easdon, who works for Denver-based Cast trucking.

One man inside the sedan was thrown into the median. The driver and another passenger had to be extricated by Lower Valley firefighters, Younger said.

Easdon said the three men, all who appeared in their 20s, were conscious at the scene after the accident.

Younger said a westbound van swerved to avoid the tumbling sedan, causing the van to collide with a second semi, which also was westbound.

The driver of the van, a South Carolina man, was taken by ambulance to the hospital with neck injuries.

The accident closed westbound traffic for roughly an hour and a half. Conditions of the four people injured were not immediately known.

“At this point, we have no idea what caused this other than driving behavior,” Younger said.

The sedan had California plates, but Younger said it wasn’t immediately clear where the trio was from.
