$500K bond set for man held in attack

A judge on Sunday set bond at $500,000 for a Grand Junction man accused of sexually assaulting and attempting to kill a woman inside his home.

William Rydell, 68, is being held on suspicion of first-degree murder, sexual assault, second-degree assault and third-degree assault in connection with an   attack on the woman at 999 Bookcliff Ave. on Friday.

Police and paramedics arrived at Rydell’s home and found the woman on a bed and not breathing. Paramedics revived her and took her to St. Mary’s Hospital, according to an arrest affidavit.

Officers said Rydell admitted choking the woman. He said they had been dating off and on for six or seven years and that she had recently found another boyfriend, the affidavit said.

The woman told police Rydell, whom she said was intoxicated, “lost it” after she told him about her boyfriend.

Police said Rydell attempted suicide by cutting himself with a knife and a hatchet, then laid down next to the woman. After about 20 minutes, he got up, went to a neighbor’s house and asked the neighbor to call 911, the affidavit said.

Grand Junction police Sgt. Lonnie Chavez said Sunday he did not have an update on the woman’s condition or know whether she is still hospitalized.
