8 area students named Daniels Fund scholars

Two Grand Valley students are among the 267 students picked this year to receive a Daniels Fund scholarship.

Amy Gekas of Palisade High School and Garrick Lemley of Grand Junction High School will receive scholarship money to attend the college or university of their choice as Daniels Scholars.

Other area students selected for the scholarship this year include Cade Castro of Plateau Valley High School, Eva Dransfield of Paonia Senior High School, Anthony Hood of Delta Senior High School, and Montrose High School’s Reina Galvan, Emily Kenney and Alexandra Millard.

The Daniels Scholarship program, established by cable magnate Bill Daniels in 2000, provides enough money in addition to a family contribution and other scholarships and grants to pay for a student’s entire undergraduate education. The scholarship can be renewed each year for up to four years.

Students have to demonstrate financial need to qualify for the scholarship.

They must demonstrate academic prowess, strength of character and leadership qualities to be selected for the scholarship.

Students were selected from Colorado, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming.
