Abandoned horses back with owner

Three horses that apparently were abandoned on Glade Park were returned to their owner Saturday, according to Mesa County Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman Sally Weese.

The Sheriff’s Department offered no other details on the latest development, saying the case is under investigation, and deputies still are interviewing witnesses, Weese said.

The Sheriff’s Department on Thursday said members of the Snow Skippers search and rescue team packed down a trail to help three horses walk out of the area where they were found, south of Turkey Flats in the Grand Mesa National Forest. The rescued horses were hungry but healthy, the Sheriff’s Department said.

The Sheriff’s Department said anyone who abandons a horse can be charged with a misdemeanor count of cruelty to animals. It was not known Saturday whether the horses’ owner would face any charges.
