About half of Mesa County voters weigh in this year

Just about half of registered Mesa County voters cast ballots in Tuesday’s off-year election.

The turnout of 41,966 voters, or about 50 percent, trailed that of the 60 percent turnout in November 2011, but exceeded the 43 percent and 34 percent who voted in 2009 and 2007, respectively, according to the figures compiled by the Elections Division of the Mesa County Clerk and Recorder’s Office.

Ballot counting continued until nearly midnight, with a late surge of ballots extending the process.

“We were going really smooth except we got hit hard at the end of the day” as the polls closed, Clerk Sheila Reiner said.
