Accused kidnapper of girl has hearing postponed

A plea hearing was postponed Thursday for a Grand Junction man accused of attempting to kidnap a 9-year-old girl by placing her in the trunk of his car and driving away.

Michael Byerrum, 40, is expected to enter a plea in his case during a Dec. 30 court hearing.

Attorneys on both sides of the case said Wednesday they need more time to reach an agreement.

Byerrum is charged with nine felony counts related to the May 31 incident in which a girl was kidnapped from the Orchard Mesa apartment complex where she lived, placed in the trunk of a car and driven to a wooded area. After Byerrum stopped the vehicle, he removed the girl from the trunk and told her not to look at him or he would kill her, according to Byerrum’s arrest affidavit.

As he tried to place a bandanna over her face, the girl bit Byerrum’s nose and ran away, the affidavit said.
