Affidavit: Man admitted driving in fatal accident

In the hours after a January fatal traffic accident, a Grand Junction man smelled of alcohol and admitted he was behind the wheel of the vehicle involved, according to court records.

Jason Wayne Shriver, 36, told authorities he was driving a sedan to his home around 12:30 a.m. Jan. 19, westbound on D 1/2 Road, when it left the right side of the road, struck a curb and rolled several times near 29 Road, according to a search warrant affidavit.

Shriver and another occupant, Shannon Gallegos, 39, of Grand Junction, were thrown from the sedan. Gallegos was pronounced dead at the scene, while Shriver was found injured on the ground nearby.

No arrests have been made in the case.

Police said in a Jan. 27 news release they still were trying to determine who was driving that night.

A detective in late January obtained a court order to take photographs of injuries to Shriver’s body, palm and fingerprints, as well as saliva and hair samples. The affidavit noted the likely presence of blood and hair on the vehicle’s air bags, which deployed during the crash.

The accident nearly severed Shriver’s left ear, and he was observed by officers at St. Mary’s Hospital in the hours after the accident with multiple other injuries to his face and upper body, the affidavit said.

The affidavit said Shriver twice acknowledged to separate officers he was driving, and those same officers noted the presence of alcohol on his breath. Three samples of his blood were drawn by medical staff.

While he said he understood that he was at the hospital, Shriver said he didn’t know why, the affidavit said. When asked who was in the vehicle with him, Shriver replied, “Rodney.”
