Air show to return in September
The West Star Aviation Air Show will return to Grand Junction in September after a four-year absence, featuring the U.S. Navy Blue Angels jet demonstration team and 13 other performers during the three-day event.
The air show, slated for Sept. 21-23, features several new performers this year, including the Indy Boys Extreme Jet Vehicles, as well as a new VIP ticket option offering premium seating, a catered meal and access to the performers. General admission attendees need to provide their own seating and are asked not to bring food or drinks into the venue. Food and drinks will be sold inside.
The previous show in Grand Junction was in 2008, a time gap owed to scheduling demands, according to spokeswoman Julie Shafer.
“Our air show is based on the availability of jet teams and the first available date we had was in September,” Shafer said.
The air show, which has been in the planning stages for the last 18 months, is sponsor-funded and organized by a volunteer board of directors.
“Without the sponsors we couldn’t have this event,” said Michael Anton, president of the board of directors. “Our sponsors are crucial. They donate a tremendous amount to this event.”
Air show sponsors contribute around 30 percent of the total budget, with the rest reliant on ticket sales and transportation fees, according to Anton. All proceeds will go to Hospice & Palliative Care of Western Colorado.
The show, which draws attendees from Colorado, Utah, Texas, Montana and New Mexico, is expected to bring crowds of up to 20,000 people for shows on Saturday and Sunday.
“This is such a family event,” Shafer said. “It is a wonderful venue and the way we have it set up is just awesome. The performers are right up close with everyone.”
Other performers are the Misty Blues all-woman skydiving team, the Black Daggers parachute demonstration team, the Grand Junction Modeleers, a U.S. Marines Osprey aircraft, OTTO the helicopter, the Hammack group, Rower Airshows and Wildhorse Aviation.
