Apartment complex hit again by fire

Investigators are looking into the cause of a fire that damaged a number of garages at an Orchard Mesa apartment complex early Wednesday and led to the evacuation of several homes.

Grand Junction firefighters responded to the Monument Ridge Townhomes, 2680 B 1/2 Road, around 2:15 a.m. and encountered heavy smoke and fire in a row of attached garages.

One resident was treated for smoke inhalation at the scene, Battalion Chief Doug Walsh said.

Firefighters contained the blaze to the garages, but several residents were evacuated, and one family was displaced by the fire.

Fire Department spokesman Mike Page said investigators remained at the complex until 10 a.m.

He said police detectives and fire investigators were following some leads, including an unconfirmed report that someone was seen leaving the scene around the time of the fire.

Damage was estimated at $125,000.

This is at least the second fire at Monument Ridge in the past nine months.
