Armed Forces rally planned

Veterans and active-duty soldiers, sailors and Marines will be remembered Saturday morning in an Armed Forces Day observance in front of the old Mesa County Courthouse.

“We’ve had no formal salute to the troops in several years, and it’s about time we got back to doing it,” organizer Greg Merschel said.

The observance will include patriotic music, a presentation of the colors, a reading of citations of valor from each branch of the military and recognition of veterans and people on active duty, as well as an address by Robert St. John.

Participants are asked to bring yellow ribbons and balloons to express the hope that active-duty personnel will return home unharmed.

“Tell them we want them back home in one piece,” Merschel said.

A support rally for the armed services filled the lawn in front of the old courthouse in 2002, a year after the Sept. 11 attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.

The rally starts at 10 a.m. Saturday and is free and open to the public.
