Arson not suspected in fire that destroyed barn near Rifle

Rifle fire investigators have been unable to determine the cause of a fire that destroyed a small storage shed filled with hay.

Rifle Deputy Fire Chief Chad Harris said arson isn’t suspected. Harris said it’s possible the hay was put up wet, causing it to become moldy, heat up and ignite.

The fire was reported at 6:40 a.m. Sunday at 795 Garfield County Road 259, or Jewell Lane, on Silt Mesa.

No people, livestock or buildings were threatened by the fire, Harris said. There was an initial threat to a surrounding field with cheatgrass, but the field was fairly wet, he said.

Burning Mountains Fire Department crews assisted in the fire response.
