Art on the Corner: ‘07-1’

“07-1” by Doug Wilson of Boulder

SCULPTURE: “07-1” is on the southeast corner of Fifth and Main streets, west of the office building that previously housed Wachovia Securities.

ARTIST: Doug Wilson of Boulder.

DESCRIPTION: The mild and stainless steel sculpture towers at just over 9 feet. Two crescent moon-shaped pieces — a mirror of each other — are artistically notched on the insides of the “moon” with an appearance similar to an arrowhead artifact.

INSPIRATION: A no-nonsense type of artist, Wilson steers away from any persuasion to give his sculptures names. He strives to create pieces that contrast — smooth/rough, shiny/dull.

He describes his works as a visual process that should be without a title, avoiding a theme or message.

“When it’s titled it, it makes people look at it in a particular way. Titles should be really generic,” Wilson told the Daily Sentinel, several years ago.

PAST ENTRIES: It’s all in the numbers. Previous sculptures Wilson has submitted to Art in the Corner are “02-02” in 2003; “Untitled 02” in 2004; “02-04” in 2005, “Untitled” in 2006; and “08-2” in 2009 (in the permanent collection, in the 400 block of Main Street). Wilson received the Lou Wille Award for Excellence in 2005.
