Art on the Corner: ‘Mountain Peak’

“Mountain Peak” by Suzi Rhae Ross of Absarokee, Mont.

SCULPTURE: “Mountain Peak” is in front of Heirlooms for Hospice, on the south side of the 600 block of Main Street.

ARTIST: Former Grand Junction resident Suzi Rhae Ross previously lived in Cass Lake, Minn., and now resides in Absarokee, Mont.

DESCRIPTION: The 4-foot tall steel, stainless steel and glass piece features a sail-shaped panel with swirls etched in its surface. At its peak is a rose-pink chunk of polished smooth glass entwined in bent steel.

INSPIRATION: “Mountain Peak” is one from a series of “outdoor jewelry” pieces for a garden.

“It’s been a really good series,” Ross said. “I’ve been really happy with it. That one I did specifically for Grand Junction — it looks like an ideal piece for downtown, especially that beautiful piece of glass,” she said.

Ross’s love for creating jewelry was family influenced.

“Mom had a jewelry store for 20 to 30 years. I began in pre-med then began taking jewelry classes and I absolutely loved it. My mom was a jeweler, my dad a veterinarian,” she said.

PAST ENTRIES: Ross’s first sculpture in Art on the Corner was “Heart of Stone” in 2008, followed by “Knotted Badge in Blue” in 2009.
