ATV accident kills female resort guest

A 22-year-old guest of the tony Kessler Canyon resort near De Beque was killed in an all-terrain vehicle accident Friday afternoon, and it appears likely the woman was not wearing a helmet.

A spokesperson for the resort said the accident happened during an ATV excursion in the rugged country near the resort. According to the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office, emergency responders responded Friday afternoon to a report of a woman seriously injured in an all-terrain-vehicle rollover accident. Despite responders’ early efforts at CPR, the woman died of her injuries at the accident scene.

The Garfield County Coroner’s Office has determined that the woman died of blunt force trauma to the head, and the manner of death is an accident.

The question of whether the woman — who was from out of state and whose identity has not been released on request of the family — was wearing a helmet is an open question.

“It’s still under investigation, but it does not appear that she had a helmet,” said Lanny Grant, deputy coroner for Garfield County.

“The safety of our guests is of utmost importance to the entire team at Kessler Canyon, who extend condolences to the family and who are cooperating with officials at this time,” wrote Kerry Anne Watson, of Tallahassee, Florida-based The Zimmerman Agency, an advertising and public relations firm representing Kessler Canyon.

Kessler Canyon resort offers luxury accommodations and guest activities including hunting, fishing and photography tours by jeep and ATV, according to the resort’s website.

The website also includes a promotional photo depicting an ATV tour at the resort with riders participating without helmets.

Representatives with The Zimmerman Agency did not respond to an email Tuesday inquiring whether the resort has a helmet policy when it comes to ATV tours.
