Aurora, Newtown relatives campaign in Colo. recall

COLORADO SPRINGS — Campaigning in Colorado’s first legislative recall election is picking up.

Relatives of those killed in the Aurora theater shooting and Newtown planned to campaign Wednesday in Colorado Springs for one of two state senators being challenged for passing stricter gun laws. Meanwhile, the hometown sheriff, Terry Maketa, and five other Colorado sheriffs who oppose the laws are holding a rally in support of the recall

Campaigning for Sen. John Morse will be Tom Sullivan and Lonnie and Sandy Phillips, whose children were killed in Aurora, and Jane Dougherty, whose sister was killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

Colorado was the only state outside the East Coast to tighten its gun laws after last year’s mass shootings and the recalls are seen as a gauge of support for gun control in battleground states.
