Authorities seek two suspects fleeing confrontation, accident
Two men were at large Saturday night after fleeing an accident after a knife fight, authorities said.
Authorities suspect the men were involved in a fight on 26 3/8 Road near the Department of Energy site. They had been fighting Friday night with a second group of people, and the two groups agreed to meet Saturday at the location on 26 3/8 Road, said Kate Porras, Grand Junction Police Department spokeswoman.
Several people were injured in the fight and left the scene in a black Chevrolet Blazer. The two suspects followed them in a white truck, police Cpl. Martin Donohue said. The Blazer flipped and landed on its roof, and the suspects left the white truck at the accident scene and ran toward the Gunnison River, Donohue said.
Two men in the Blazer were taken to the hospital with stab wounds and cuts, Porras said. A third man remained at the scene with a cut on his stomach.
The Police Department K-9 unit tried to track the suspects along the river. According to the Mesa County Sheriff’s Department, the footprints they were following along the river doubled back toward Orchard Mesa Cemetery.
Deputies and other law enforcement officers searched Saturday evening within a perimeter around the Department of Energy site, but they ended the search after it became apparent the men fled the area, Sheriff’s Department spokesman Chuck Warner said.
One of the suspects is thought to live in the nearby Elm Park neighborhood, Warner said.
The Sheriff’s Department is leading the investigation with cooperation from the Grand Junction Police Department and the Colorado State Patrol.
