AWOL suspect jailed in Junction

A Grand Junction man who was suspected of being absent without leave from the U.S. Army was arrested Saturday afternoon at a home in Grand Junction, according to the Mesa County Sheriff’s Department.

Pvt. Terrance Hilton, 20, was wanted on a federal warrant after fleeing from a police escort Wednesday in the Denver International Airport. Hilton was missing from the Army and was in the process of being taken from Salt Lake City to Fort Carson when he fled in the airport, authorities said.

Deputies had been watching a couple of homes in Grand Junction that Hilton was thought to be connected to when he was arrested without incident at 4:15 p.m.

“He was cooperative,” Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman Lisa McCammon said. “It was good work on our deputies’ part.”

McCammon said she did not know the home’s address or how deputies determined Hilton’s whereabouts.

Hilton was in custody Saturday on a no-bond federal hold at Mesa County Jail, the Sheriff’s Department said.
