Backcountry hikes offered at Mesa Verde

Mesa Verde National Park ranger Rebecca Geddes points out some of the structures in Oak Tree House during a special backcountry hike at the park. Hikes to Mug House and Spring House are offered through Labor Day.

Summer vacation hasn’t completely ended just because you’re getting up while it’s still dark to pack a school lunch.

September is a great time to experience Mesa Verde National Park and the park still is offering its special backcountry hikes to areas not seen by the average visitor.

Two hikes, the two-hour jaunt to Mug House and a six-hour trek across Wetherill Mesa, are available through Labor Day, Sept. 6.

The eight-hour Spring House hike is available through Sept. 30.

Tickets are available for all three hikes but some dates are closing rapidly since these ranger-led hikes are limited to 14 people.

Tickets for Mug House are $15. The others are $35 per person (includes lunch and trail snacks) and must be purchased by noon the day before the hike.

Not only are the ruins breathtaking, this might the last time you aren’t packing somebody else’s lunch.
