Bicyclist, 63, killed in collision with truck

A bicyclist riding along Colorado Highway 92 in Delta Wednesday night was struck and killed by a pickup truck when he tried to cross the roadway, according to the Delta Police Department.

The accident happened just before 8 p.m., near where Henrie Street meets Colorado 92.

Henrie is a small, gravel road just east of where Crawford Avenue intersects the highway.

The man killed in the accident has been identified by police as 63-year-old Delta resident Craig Hampton. The person driving the pickup truck involved in the crash has only been identified as a 60-year-old man from Eckert.

Delta Police Department spokeswoman Jamie Head said she was unaware of any citations issued in connection with the incident, and that a full reconstruction and investigation is ongoing.

“They have to do their whole investigation before there’s any determination made on any kind of charges or determining if anyone was at fault,” Head said. She said the highway has wide shoulders on either side and that “it’s possible to be safely ridden.”

Emergency responders took the cyclist to St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction, via CareFlight helicopter, where the man later died. Head said patients taken to Delta County Memorial Hospital, which is a little more than a mile away from the accident scene, with injuries too serious to be treated there are often transported by CareFlight to St. Mary’s.

She said she did not know if the man killed Wednesday evening was first taken to the Delta hospital before being flown to Grand Junction.
