Cops: Las Vegas man sold fake coins locally
Christopher Angelo, 53, of Las Vegas, was arrested Friday on suspicion of 26 counts of forgery and felony theft between $2,000 and $5,000, after an investigation showed he sold counterfeit gold coins, via Craiglist, to at least two local victims, according to an arrest affidavit.
A local resident reported to Grand Junction police that he paid $2,000 for six coins — gold Indian head coins with certificates of authenticity from the Professional Coin Grading Service — only to learn the items and accompanying paperwork were bogus.
Another reported local victim paid $4,000 for the bogus coins and filed a report with the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office.
Angelo was contacted by a third party under the auspices of meeting in Grand Junction to buy more coins.
Angelo was arrested Friday afternoon by police in the parking of a business at 681 Horizon Drive, where he allegedly confessed to police that he’d been buying fake coins from China and passing them off online as authentic, according to the affidavit.
