Odd incident ends in charges

A 41-year-old man was in Mesa County court on Thursday, advised on a possible charge of impersonating a Mesa County sheriff’s deputy.

Dutch Kelly is alleged to have “oddly approached local children” who live in a home nearby, according to Judge Michael Grattan, and said that he was from the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office. District Attorney Dan Rubinstein said in court that Kelly may have been “desperately trying to get in touch” with the father of the children, offering up the possibility that he was seeking a cigarette from the man. An incident report was sealed in the case on Thursday.

Kelly was issued a personal-recognizance bond Thursday, but was ordered to keep a certain distance from the home or any of the family members involved.
