Assault, pandering alleged

An alleged pimp who reportedly beat his female associate was arrested Sunday after law enforcement officials found large amounts of heroin and cocaine in his apartment, according to the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office.

Dante Rashad Gaines, 24, was arrested on suspicion of criminal impersonation, robbery, third-degree assault, theft, pandering, distribution of controlled substances and possession of controlled substances after his female associate reported to law enforcement that Gaines had beaten and robbed her, the Sheriff’s Office said.

A search of Gaines’ apartment in the 1000 block of Rood Avenue reportedly turned up 3 ounces of suspected black tar heroin, a baggie of suspected cocaine and $3,400 in cash.

Dog shot, owner cited

The owner of two pit bulls was cited last week after one of the dogs was shot by a neighbor after the animal allegedly charged at the neighbor’s livestock on Grand Mesa, the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office reported.

Brian Stephens, 32, 8638 48 1/2 Road, was cited Wednesday on suspicion of having two animals at large and two unlicensed animals after his dogs allegedly ran at a group of yearling heifers and new calves owned by his neighbor on 48 1/2 Road, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The livestock owner told deputies he warned Stephens after repeated incidents that he would shoot the dogs to protect his animals, the Sheriff’s Office said. The neighbor told deputies he shot one of the dogs and noticed it limping away but wasn’t sure if the dog had been killed. The report provided no additional details about the condition of the dog.

Deputies smelled raw marijuana when they contacted Stephens and two other adults at the house, but Stephens said he was growing the amount of marijuana plants allowed by law, according to a report.
