Racial slur results in arrest

Grand Junction police jailed a 63-year-old man who was accused of yelling racial slurs at an Army veteran who was collecting canned goods in a food drive Aug. 8.

Kermit Randall Carr, who is white, shouted the n-word at the veteran numerous times, the arrest affidavit alleged.

The incident occurred as the veteran, a 56-year-old black man, was collecting food for the Department of Veterans Affairs. Carr asked the man if he was a veteran. When he responded “yes,” Carr asked what country, adding, “Oh, it looks like you should be from Africa,” the affidavit alleged.

Carr was picked up on an outstanding warrant and taken to Mesa County Jail on suspicion of harassment and disorderly conduct.

According to the Grand Junction Police Department:

■ Someone broke into a home Aug. 7 in the 1800 block of Elm Street and removed items valued at more than $750.

■ Destiny Thompson, 19, was issued a summons Saturday on two outstanding warrants accusing her of failure to appear and failure to comply.

■ Someone broke into a vehicle Sunday in the 700 block of Horizon Drive and removed items valued at less than $500.

■ Someone broke into a home Thursday in the 300 block of Belford Avenue and removed items valued at less than $2,000.

■ Someone broke into a home Thursday in the 600 block of North 18th Street and removed items valued at less than $2,000.

■ Someone broke into a home Monday in the 1800 block of Bunting Avenue, but the reporting party declined to press charges.

■ Robert Allen Smith, 44, of Grand Junction was jailed Monday on suspicion of third-degree assault.

■ Letera Lynn Beagley, 25, of Grand Junction was jailed Monday on suspicion of third-degree assault.

 

According to the Mesa County Sheriff’s Department:

■ Gary Dean Mersman, 49, was jailed Monday on suspicion of possession of methamphetamine, possession of an illegal weapon, driving while a habitual traffic offender and driving under the influence of alcohol.

 

According to the Montrose Police Department:

■ Travis Baca, 33, of Montrose was jailed Tuesday on suspicion of harassment and criminal mischief.
