Stop turns into chase
A Mesa County sheriff’s deputy attempted to stop a motorcycle on Aug. 21, near the intersection of Orchard Avenue and 30 Road for suspicion of failing to signal before turning. When the driver failed to stop, accelerated to almost 90 mph along the Interstate 70 Business Loop and ran at least one red light, the deputy stopped pursuit of the vehicle, according to an affidavit.
Further investigation led police to believe the motorcyclist was Leonard Russell Edwards Jr., 49. Records showed Edwards had two outstanding warrants for his arrest and his driver’s status was revoked as a habitual traffic offender.
The Mesa County Street Crimes Unit took Edwards into custody on Wednesday at 3009 D 1/2 Road. He was arrested on suspicion of vehicular eluding, driving a motor vehicle while revoked as a habitual traffic offender, a signaling violation, reckless driving, and being a fugitive on a warrant from another jurisdiction.
