Inmate dies after jail jump
Montrose County authorities waited more than two weeks to announce the news that Michael Thrash, an inmate at the Montrose County Jail, jumped from a second-floor landing and was seriously injured in the fall on July 22.
Thrash, described as “much older than 60,” was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction and died on July 30, Montrose County Media Relations Manager Katie Yergensen said. An autopsy is pending.
Montrose County Sheriff Rick Dunlap was out of town for two weeks when Thrash fell and staff was not authorized to release information about the incident until Dunlap approved it, Yergensen said.
Man accused in car arson
The Mesa County Sheriff’s Department alleges that 20-year-old Amadeus Gillette is the person responsible for an arson Saturday at Overpass Auto, 3356 1/2 Road in Clifton, in addition to a string of related break-ins and incidents of vehicle damage.
The fire, which engulfed a 2005 Honda Civic, was reported just after 5:30 a.m. Saturday, and police contacted Gillette some 20 minutes later. Gillette told officers that he planned to walk to Fort Collins along U.S. Highway 6. Police let him go.
Law enforcement officers later caught up with Gillette, and interviewed him about the arson and a number of other vehicle break-ins. He denied any involvement, but alleged inconsistent statements led authorities to charge Gillette with criminal attempted aggravated motor vehicle theft in the second-degree, second-degree arson, first-degree criminal trespass, criminal attempt first-degree criminal trespass, and third-degree criminal trespass.
