Pot bust made at bus stop

A 30-year-old Florida man, who was pulled off a Greyhound bus in Grand Junction when law enforcement found 15 pounds of marijuana in his duffle bag Tuesday afternoon, was released on bond the next day.

Marcus Alan Jones, who was on a bus bound from Los Angeles to Chicago, could be charged with a felony count of drug possession with intent to distribute after Mesa County Sheriff’s Deputy Mike Miller found the one-pound packages of marijuana after a drug-sniffing dog alerted at Jones’ luggage.

Mesa County Judge Craig Henderson granted him a $5,000 personal-recognizance bond Wednesday after hearing argument from public defender Scott Burrill, who pointed out that Jones has a minimal criminal history and a good record of showing up for court even when court cases are based in another state.

Assistant District Attorney Rich Tuttle said in court he was concerned about Jones’ lack of ties to the area, and asked that Jones be monitored by pretrial services and be restrained from drugs.

Jones is due to return to court Dec. 6.

Teen charged in menacing

An 18-year-old Grand Junction man faces a felony menacing charge after being accused of shooting a gun at a party early Sunday morning despite being on bond for other felony cases involving weapons.

Witnesses told police that Tyrone D. Gibson pulled out a gun during a fight and fired at least one shot shortly after midnight Sunday morning at a party in the 2600 block of Elm Avenue, according to arresting documents.

“He is at a party, things go south and he is alleged to have pulled out his weapon,” said Assistant District Attorney Rich Tuttle Wednesday in court.

Less than a day later, on Sunday evening, officers responded to a separate home in the 300 block of Chipeta Avenue for a report of shots fired. An 18-year-old man who was involved in the fight told police he believed Gibson had fired at his house in retaliation for the fight the night before, the report said.

A public defender asked for a personal-recognizance bond, saying that Gibson has ties to the area and that he suffered a fractured bone in his face during the fight the first night. Mesa County Judge Craig Henderson refused, issuing Gibson a $10,000 cash-only bond and ordering him to return to court Dec. 15.
