Pair accused of menacing homeless man

Michael Jesse Lupo, 21, 257 E. Gloucester Circle, and Tanner Reed, 21, 542 E. Valley Circle, were arrested Sunday on suspicion of robbery, menacing and theft after a duffel bag was taken from a man along North Avenue, according to the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office.

Lupo and Reed asked the man for a cigarette and when he said he didn’t have one to give, the men challenged him to a fight, an affidavit said. The victim said he heard the men talk about a gun and then saw Reed reach under his jacket into his waistband. The victim said he then ran away to the other side of the street and called police, according to the arrest affidavit.

One of the men told the victim, “If you won’t give us a cigarette, we’ll just take your bag,” the affidavit said. The victim told police he is homeless and items in his duffel bag are valued at about $200. Police did not find a gun on either of the suspects.

Middle schooler says man gave him $50

A Redlands mother reported her son had been involved in suspicious incident after he was handed money while walking home from school on Friday, according to the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office.

The mother said her middle school-age son was walking in the 500 block of Foy Road when a black man in a silver-colored sport utility vehicle with tinted windows handed her child a $50 bill. The man told the boy he was walking well, staying on the correct side of the road and using the crosswalks. The boy said he took the money and said thank you. The mother told deputies she would donate the money to a charity if the man’s vehicle was not found.
