Blotter for Jan. 13, 2014

Old scam with a new twist

A Garfield County resident received a telephone call Thursday from a person claiming to be a deputy with the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office.

The man who made the call told the woman who answered the telephone that if she did not pay money she owed to the county, there would be a warrant issued for her arrest within the hour.

“The unfortunate twist to this is that somehow the caller was able to make the caller ID on the resident telephone appear to be the number for the sheriff’s office,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

The resident was told that no deputy from the Sheriff’s Office had called her despite what her caller ID might indicate.

No law enforcement officer will ever contact a resident and tell him or her to pay an amount immediately under threat of an arrest warrant, the Sheriff’s Office said.
