Avalanche tied to 2 skiers
Two skiers on Sunday escaped injury after they were suspected of causing an avalanche in the Bear Creek area near Telluride, according to the San Miguel County Sheriff’s Department.
The skiers were observed in the area skiing outside a boundary area, triggering a slide that caught and carried one of the individuals for an unspecified distance, the agency said. The other skier was able to make it back to the boundary area, where he was met by the Telluride Ski Patrol. A Sheriff’s Department search and rescue fixed-wing aircraft was deployed and spotted tracks leaving the area. It was later learned the second individual had made it back to town.
The man was “counseled about the importance of reporting such incidents in order to mitigate any further risks to rescuers,” a release said.
