$50K in property stolen

A couple returning to their winter home in Grand Junction on Tuesday after seven months away discovered that burglars had stolen more than $50,000 of property, an elephant gun, a revolver, assorted jewelry and ammunition, according to a police report.

The couple, whose home is near the intersections of 26 and G Roads, reported that the rifle was a .470 caliber Nitro Express rifle used for hunting big game. The handgun was a Ruger 9 mm revolver. Among the missing jewelry was all the wife’s turquoise pieces.

When police responded to the home, they found no signs of forced entry, but some “disturbances in the dust” near the dog door into the couple’s garage, the report said.

“When I pointed this out to (the husband), he told me the suspect would have still needed a key to unlock the door leading into the house from the garage,” the report said.

Police noted in their report a plan to contact the person who had been checking on the house for them, whose name was redacted the report and who was the first person to report the burglary on Dec. 27. The person had a warrant outstanding for his arrest, the report said.

Person injured in house fire

Firefighters transported one person to a local hospital, and rescued a trapped dog, while responding to a fire in a home in the 2000 block of North Avenue Wednesday evening.

The Grand Junction Fire Department responded just before 7 p.m. to the fire in a single-family residence, officials said.

“Upon arriving at the scene one patient was immediately transported to the hospital for injuries and fire crews began working to extinguish the fire. Early on it was discovered that one dog was still inside the home. Crews were able to rescue the animal and extinguish the fire quickly,” officials said in a news release.
