Couple faces theft charges

A man and woman face burglary and theft charges after they were allegedly caught in the act of stealing more than $2,000 worth of property from their next-door neighbor in the 2300 block of Gunnison Avenue on Friday.

Twyla Jean Ferree, 33, and Gary Richard Weant, 38, were both arrested after Grand Junction police officers responding to a trespass report surrounded the home and waited for them to come out, according to affidavits for their arrests.

Weant admitted they had entered the house through a window and that their “intent was to go through and take items from the address,” the report said. Officers found radios, a silver ring and other items in Weant’s pockets, and a “large pile” of stolen items was found between the two houses.

The woman who lives in the house told a judge Monday during Ferree’s and Weants’ bond hearings that she had recently moved out of town but that her belongings were still at the house.

Ferree and Weant were both released from jail Monday on personal-recognizance bonds by Mesa County Judge Michael Grattan.
