River victim intoxicated
A man whose body was pulled from the Colorado River on Saturday evening was intoxicated when he died, friends told Mesa County sheriff’s deputies at the scene.
The man, who had not been identified Sunday pending notification of family members, was pulled from an eddy off the river near C 3/4 Road and Rosevale Road, across the river from the Las Colonias Park area. Friends said the man went under water, rose to the surface, then went down again without coming up again, according to Mesa County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Chuck Warner. A dive team from the Grand Junction Fire Department recovered the man’s body shortly after responding to a 911 call for help at 5:10 p.m. Saturday, Warner said.
Warner said the area where the man’s body was found has shallow and deep water. The man’s identity and cause of death will be released in a Mesa County Coroner’s Office report.
