Arrest in big gun heist

An 18-year-old Grand Junction man is accused of using a torch to break into a safe and steal nearly $17,000 worth of weapons and ammunition in February, according to the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office.

Steven Taylor Cook appeared in Mesa County Court on Wednesday on suspicion of theft from an at-risk adult, second-degree burglary, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, criminal mischief and conspiracy.

According to an arrest affidavit, Cook and 18-year-old MaCade Gary Bronson visited a juvenile who lived at a residence in the area of 12 Road in Loma in order to check for ways to break into an outbuilding and steal guns that were stored there.

Cook and Bronson later returned to the residence with the juvenile to break into the outbuilding and used a torch to break into the safe, according to the affidavit.

Cook and Bronson also allegedly stole chemicals from Fruita Monument High School to use with the torch.

Mesa County Court Judge Craig Henderson on Wednesday ordered Cook held on a $5,000 cash-only bond.
