Rafters helped from river
Search and rescue teams with the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office rescued six rafters who became stranded on the Colorado River after dark on July 14.
The rafters launched from the Blue Heron boat ramp and had planned to raft to the Colorado River bridge on Colorado Highway 340, south of Fruita. The rafters were found on the river about halfway to their destination in good health and taken to the James M. Robb Colorado River State Park in Fruita where they were reunited with family, the Sheriff’s Office said.
According to the Grand Junction Police Department:
■ Shanice Maldonado, 21, of Grand Junction, was arrested and released on a summons July 19 on suspicion of DUI, failing to present evidence of insurance and failing to drive in a single lane at the intersection of 28 1/2 Road and Texas Avenue. A known juvenile female, 16, of Clifton, who was apparently accompanying Maldonado, was issued a summons on suspicion of illegal possession or consumption of alcohol by an underage person.
■ Billy Martin, 24, of Wyoming, was arrested and released on a summons for DUI, DUI per se, and drove the wrong way on a one-way street after being contacted near the intersection of Colorado Avenue and South Fifth Street.
■ Alan Hillesland, 28, of Grand Junction, was contacted at 2817 North Aven. for a traffic violation. Hillesland was found to have an active warrant for his arrest and was remanded to the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office. Hillesland also received a summons on suspicion of driving while license was revoked, failure to present evidence of insurance, and turning left in front of approaching traffic.
■ Ashley Grimm, 29, and Edward Smith, 35, both of Montana, were contacted Wednesday as suspicious persons at 596 25 Road. After investigation, Grimm was arrested and jailed on suspicion of first degree aggravated motor vehicle theft, possession of a Schedule 1 controlled substance, criminal possession of an identifying document, displaying stolen plates, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Smith was arrested and jailed on charges of first-degree aggravated motor vehicle theft, possession of a Schedule 1 controlled substance, displaying stolen plates, providing false identifying information to authorities and possession of drug paraphernalia.
■ Johnny Joe, 46, was arrested and issued a summons Thursday on suspicion of theft of less than $50 and trespassing at 2222 U.S. Highway 6&50.
■ Ashley Wethington, 18, and a juvenile female, 17, both of Montrose, were arrested and issued summonses Thursday at 2424 U.S. Highway 6&50 on suspicion of shoplifting items valued at less than $500.
■ A known adult female was sexually assaulted Saturday by three unknown males in the southeast quadrant of the city.
