Assault on officer alleged
A homeless man is accused of assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest after an officer with the Grand Junction Police Department attempted to arrest him on six outstanding warrants.
Over a five-month period, Richard Alan Sears, 53, is accused of failing to register as a sex offender, theft and money laundering.
According to an arrest affidavit, Sears’ parole officer located him in a grocery store and attempted to arrest him. Sears tried to hit the officer and ran out of the store, where he again attempted to strike the police officer, according to arresting documents.
The officer allegedly deployed a Taser to incapacitate Sears and arrest him.
In court Thursday, public defender Jason Groth requested a personal-recognizance bond for Sears, stating that Sears is terminally ill. Mesa County Court Judge Craig Henderson instead ordered Sears held on two cash-only bonds totaling $15,000.
