Man dies in one-car crash

A man was killed in a crash Monday evening near mile marker 15 on Colorado Highway 13 outside of Rifle.

Troy D. Friar, 53, of Grand Junction, was the sole occupant in a single-vehicle accident and was pronounced dead at the scene by investigators with the Garfield County Coroner. Friar was not wearing a seat belt.

His cause of death is pending an autopsy. The manner of death is being investigated as an accident, the coroner’s statement said. According to the Colorado State Patrol, drugs and alcohol are suspected factors.

Man accused of assault

Tyrel Sanders, 25, appeared in Mesa County Court on Tuesday advised on a possible second-degree assault charge, among others, following an alleged domestic violence incident Monday night.

Grand Junction police officers responded to an address in the 200 block of Belford Avenue on a report of a disturbance. Officers could hear Sanders and a woman arguing, and a witness allegedly told police they saw a man believed to be Sanders push the woman. “(The witness) heard what sounded like someone being slapped and then heard someone ‘gasping’ for air, as if they were being choked,” a police affidavit reads,

Mesa County Court Judge Michael Grattan issued Sanders a personal-recognizance bond on Tuesday.
