Man accused of drug, firearm possession

A California man faces a mandatory prison sentence if convicted on charges of drug possession with intent to distribute and possession of a firearm, in connection with a traffic stop on Interstate 70 on Tuesday.

Kristopher Whalen, 29, allegedly consented to a search of the Subaru he was driving near mile marker 17, and Mesa County sheriff’s deputies said they found 10 half-pound vacuum-sealed packages of marijuana, weighing 5 pounds total, in a suitcase. A .380 caliber handgun and a loaded magazine were allegedly found in the vehicle’s center console, according to law enforcement.

Because of the combination of a firearm and drugs, possible charges for Whalen include mandatory prison sentences, which a judge cited in issuing him a $20,000 cash or surety bond in the case Wednesday.
