Burglary, theft alleged

Jesus Ruiz-Meraz, 26, was arrested Sunday on suspicion of burglary and theft.

According to the Grand Junction Police Department, callers in the 600 block of 26 Road and the 600 block of Meander Way reported seeing a suspicious man Sunday afternoon. Responding officers checked the area on foot and saw Ruiz-Meraz perched on the exterior seal of a home’s third-floor window in the 2500 block of Music Lane, according to an arrest affidavit.

Ruiz-Meraz was holding an eight-inch butcher knife and threatened to cut himself and to jump, according to police. While an officer tried finding a way into the house, Ruiz-Meraz cut his wrist, dropped the knife and dove from his perch, landing prone on a boat three stories below, according to the arrest affidavit.

The homeowner later reported the knife was his, and police determined Ruiz-Meraz could have reached the third-story perch only by going through the house. After being treated for a head laceration, he was arrested on suspicion of burglary, trespassing and theft.
